Banff Conference

In Person: 21 April-23 April

Good afternoon everyone,

I am very pleased to share that we will move ahead with plans for the 2022 meeting of the Medieval Association of the Pacific (MAP) at the Banff Centre, Banff, Alberta, Canada, 21 April – 23 April 2022. This decision to meet in person has been made via consultation between members of the Local Organising Committee (Courtnay Konshuh, University of Calgary; Murray McGillivray, University of Calgary; Jeremy Blunt, University of Calgary; David Clemis, Mount Royal University; Kenna Olsen, Mount Royal University and Chair, MAP Local Organising Committee) and members of the MAP Council (Arlene Sindelar, University of British Columbia and President, MAP; Anthony Perron, Loyola Marymount University, and Vice-President MAP; Edward M. Schoolman, University of Nevada, and Treasurer MAP; and Catherine Saucier, Arizona State University and MAP Secretary).

At this writing, I do not yet know exact registration rates or precise rates for accommodation, or for meals, but I will be able to share this information, and a registration site that will be managed by the Banff Centre, very soon. Once registration opens, delegates should also expect a swift registration deadline date and accommodation deadline, as our need to finalise our delegate numbers, programme of papers, and other event details, must be managed against our quickly approaching conference date and all manner of details that the Covid-19 pandemic has initiated and caused.

In addition to the excitement of planning to move forward with an in-person event, I am also very excited and grateful to be able to announce the following:

***Our final banquet on Saturday, 23 April will be held at the famous Banff Springs Hotel, an iconic “castle” of a railway hotel built in 1888, and a National Historic Site of Canada, will be sponsored by the Office of Research, Scholarship, and Community Engagement, Mount Royal University.

***Our opening evening reception and dinner on Thursday, 21 April held, along with the entirety of our conference papers and plenaries, at the Banff Centre, a unique post-secondary institution in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, will be co-sponsored between the Mount Royal University Library, and the University of Calgary Faculty of Arts.

***We hope to include a display of materials from both the Mount Royal University Archives and Special Collections, the University of Calgary Archives and Special Collections, and the University of Calgary Nickle Gallery as part of our programme.

Thank you for your patience. I know you will understand that our plans are contingent on potential travel restrictions, including possible testing and quarantining requirements, and that at a certain level, these requirements could change. Delegates are encouraged to keep themselves apprised of all health and travel restrictions. Delegates can go here for information regarding travel to Canada, testing, and other measures during Covid-19. For information regarding return to the United States, please go here. For information regarding testing for Covid-19 from the Calgary International Airport (YYC), please go here. For more on the Banff Centre’s current and changing vaccination policies, go here. Please also note that masking regulations could change, as we move forward and in accordance with Banff Centre policies. Delegates should plan accordingly. We will make every effort to communicate any changes to travel and health policies if and when necessary.

At this time, please email both Kenna L. Olsen (kolsen@mtroyal.ca) and Murray McGillivray (mmcgilli@ucalgary.ca) indicating either your intention to attend our conference in-person, or your decision to not attend. Please do so before Tuesday, 01 March 2022. Doing so is an important step – it will ensure that we can finalise our programme and set registration details promptly.

Delegates are also encouraged to make sure that their MAP membership is current. Please go here to renew or pay dues.

On behalf of the MAP Council and Local Organising Committee, I very much look forward to this long-delayed meeting,

Kenna
